The LASPEF

Laboratório de Silvicultura e Pesquisas Florestais

The LASPEF (Forestry and Forest Research Laboratory) was created in 2013. Our projects deal with the ecology, management and restoration of tropical forests and savannas. We are also interested in the establishment and evaluation of programs, projects and public policies for large-scale restoration and conservation.

Research areas

Our projects address a wide range of topics related to the ecology, management, and restoration of forests and savannas. The main research areas are:

Forest management

Management of degraded fragments: The Atlantic Forest is one of the world’s hotspots for biodiverity conservation, yet much of it is severely degraded. We test restoration techniques, such as cutting lianas and enrichment planting, to help restore degraded forest remnants.

Atlantic Forest

Species, techniques and the monitoring of Atlantic Forest restoration: The choice of tree species strongly influences the initial success of forest restoration. In this research area, we study which species are most suitable for Atlantic Forest restoration plantings, how to combine them in restoration models, and how to monitor restoration success over time using ecological indicators.

Cerrado

Species and techniques for the Cerrado restoration: The Brazilian Cerrado is a global biodiversity hotspot with an urgent demand for effective restoration techniques. As a savanna ecosystem, it requires approaches beyond tree planting. Our projects focus on developing and evaluating techniques for producing and reintroducing non-tree species, such as native grasses, to advance Cerrado restoration.

Forestry

Native tree species for timber production: We study how native timber trees grow in pure stands and in diverse restoration plantings. Our goal is to identify species with economic value and models with strong potential for large-scale restoration.
