The LASPEF

Laboratório de Silvicultura e Pesquisas Florestais

The LASPEF (Forestry and Forest Research Laboratory) was created in 2013. Our projects deal with the ecology, management and restoration of tropical forests and savannas. We are also interested in the establishment and evaluation of programs, projects and public policies for large-scale restoration and conservation.

Browse our pages for more information on projects, ideas and partnerships.

Research areas

Our projects deal with many topics of the ecology, management and restoration of forests and savannas. Main research areas are:

Forest management

Management of degraded fragments: The Atlantic Forest is a global hotspot for biodiversity conservation. However, Atlantic forest is current severely degraded. Our goals are to test restoration techniques, such as lianas cutting and enrichment tree plantings, for the recovery of Atlantic Forest degraded remnants.

Atlantic Forest

Species, techniques and the monitoring of Atlantic Forest restoration: Tree species we select for plantings affect the initial success of forest restoration. In this topic, we have been studied which are the best tree species for Atlantic Forest restoration plantings, how to mix them into restoration models, and how to evaluate restoration success over time using ecological indicators.

Cerrado

Species and techniques for the Cerrado restoration: The Brazilian Cerrado is a global hotspot for biodiversity conservation. There is a huge demand for developing Cerrado restoration techniques. The Cerrado is a savanna and our projects focus mainly in developing and evaluating techniques for producing and reintroducing non-tree species, such as native grasses, in the cerrado restoration.

Forestry

Native species production: We evaluate the growth of native timber tree species in pure and in high diverse forest restoration plantings aiming to select species for economic use and the models with higher potential for large-scale restoration.
